Subject
Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship

I have the pleasure of inviting you to nominate candidates for the Mellon
Mays Undergraduate Fellowship. As many of you know, the fellowship, now
in its eighteenth year at Queens, supports exceptional undergraduates who
plan to attain the Ph.D. and enter the professoriate.

Eligible students should be sophomores with outstanding academic potential
and an interest in pursuing a Ph.D. They must identify themselves as
minority students or have a demonstrated commitment to "eradicating racial
disparities" and promoting racial and ethnic understanding. In addition,
they must have a GPA of 3.3 or above and be majors in one of the following
Mellon-designated fields:

Anthropology Area Studies Art History Classics
Computer Science Demography Earth Science Ecology
English Ethnomusicology Foreign Languages Geology
History Literature Mathematics Musicology
Philosophy Physics Political Theory Religion
Sociology

Students selected for the fellowship receive two years of financial and
intellectual support. In addition to receiving tuition reimbursement and
an annual stipend of up to $7,000, they work closely with a faculty mentor
to prepare for advanced study in their fields.

The participation of the Queens College faculty, both in nominating
students and in serving as their mentors, is crucial to the continued
success of the program. I urge you to consider nominating a student this
year. Applications are due on Monday, April 14, 2008.
Completed applications can be dropped off at Delany Hall, Room 125.
The application form can be downloaded and printed from the following
link: www.qc.cuny.edu/qcmellon/pdfs/applicationform.pdf .
Feel free to duplicate and distribute the application form to potential
candidates. There will be an open house for prospective fellows on
Monday, March 17, 12:15-1 pm in the Honors Center/ Temp II. Please
encourage the students you wish to nominate to attend.

The program appreciates your continued support. For more information,
call the Mellon office at 718-997-2845 or me at 718-997-2806 or visit our
Web site, www.qc.cuny.edu/qcmellon/.
