Subject: REQUEST FOR HELP: Community outreach for the March 30th Broadband
Advisory Committee Hearing.
Friends, Colleagues and Partners,
Gale and I are requesting your help in making the first-ever hearing
of the joint Mayoral-City Council New York City Broadband Advisory
Committee a smashing success. See below for what you can do to help.
Thanks in advance for your help!
*****
Venue and Time Change
We have changed the venue of the public hearing so that we can
accommodate more people. We are aiming for 200 people or more. The
March 30th public hearing will now be held in the Gould Memorial Library
Auditorium on the campus of Bronx Community College, University Ave. at
W. 181st Street, from 10 am to Noon. This is all thanks for Ryan
Merola, CUNY student extraordinaire, and Carol White, the Special
Assistant to the President of Bronx Community College for Public
Affairs. The event will still take place on the morning of Friday,
March 30.

Community Outreach and Publicity for the Hearing
The beautiful auditorium at the Bronx Community College can hold
500+ people so in order to "pack the room," we need your help in getting
the word out! The following are some of the things you can do. Feel
free to ask your friends and colleagues to do the same.
* Forward (and post, if possible) the attached flyer to colleagues,
friends and interested parties. Also, feel free to print out the
flyer, photocopy and pass out at meetings.
* Send out information about the March 30th hearing through your
organization's listserves / e-newsletters. Feel free to cut and
paste hearing information from the blog we set up. The address of
the blog is http://www.nycbroadband.blogspot.com/.
* Post information about the March 30th hearing on your
organization's website. Or refer visitors to your website to the
blog we set up. See above.
Schoolchildren and college students: We'd love to have entire
classes attend the hearing. Please let me and cc'ed staffers know if
you can help with this.
Senior citizens: We'd love to have seniors talking about their
technology needs. Also, please let me and cc'ed staffers know if you
can help with this.
NYC Broadband Blog
Gale and I have set up a blog re: the topic of broadband in New York
City. We'd love to have people starting posting their thoughts (or just
respond to the posts and comments already posted)! Please encourage
others to post. It would be great to have an on-line conversation about
this topic, the work of the Advisory Committee and in-process New York
City Economnic Development Corporation broadband report. Many thanks!
Potential Witnesses for the Public Hearing
But we are looking for articulate speakers who can speak about
broadband and how it can improve their own quality of life as well as
that of their family and their community. Parents of schoolchildren,
schoolchildren, nonprofit leaders, small business owners and senior
citizens are highly desired. Feel free to send me and cc'ed staffers
the names of potential speakers. We will keep a list. Or just ask
people to show up and testify!
Press
We all agree that access to broadband is an important issue. So
let's educate people. The best way to do this is to get the media to
write about this issue. Please feel free to talk to members of the
media about the hearing. If you think there is a reporter we should be
making a special effort to reach out to, please let me know. I will add
them to the list.
Elected Officials
Some elected officials do not understand this issue well. So please
talk to elected officials about this issue. Also, please tell them
about the March 30th hearing, and the Broadband Advisory Committee.
Videotape and Webcast
We would like to have the hearing videotaped and, hopefully, posted
on official City websites. Barring that, YouTube will suffice. Please
let me know if your organization has this capacity.
Agenda for the Hearing
When an audience member testifies, we'd like to have a conversation
between the witnesses and Committee Members. Thus, Gale and I have
asked David Birdsell, a Committee Member and Dean of the School of
Public Affairs at Baruch College to facilitate the hearing and the
conversations between the general public and the Committee Members. He
is very experienced at this, and an amazing public speaker. Right now,
the hearing agenda is as follows:
* Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion Jr.
* President Carolyn Williams of Bronx Community College (invited)
* Council Member Gale Brewer
* CUNY Representative: CUNY CIO Brian Cohen (invited)
* VIPs:
o Former FCC Chair William Kennard, current FCC Commissioner
Michael Copps and US Senator Charles Schumer all had
scheduling conflicts and could not attend the hearing
o US Senator Clinton and Governor Spitzer have also been invited
* Public Testimony / Town Hall
Please e-mail me or call me my cell, 347.563.1295, if you have any
questions, concerns or comments. You can also call Jeff Baker at
212.788.9193, Colleen Pagter at 212.788-9085 or Ryan Merola at
917.697.4628 if you can't reach me. I/we would love to discuss. Thanks
for your help!
Regards,
Bruce and Gale
